Should I be surprised that the synthesizer didn't figure this out? Is there a better way to code this? Am I supposed to be doing my own logic minimization before handing things off to the tools? Well this sounds just like my doubts expressed in http://www.8052.com/forum/read.phtml?id=144899. So, if this is a result from a state-of-the-art synthesis tool, what was the result of the nonoptimal tools of the past? But I am not surprised at all. In software, although we expect a certain optimisation level from the compiler, the non-optimal result costs little compared to the time and effort needed to spit out an optimal version "by hand", and also the superoptimising compiler starts to be very complex (read: expensive, hard to maintain, possibly buggy). In programmable logic (notabene solid silicon) the figures might be very different... JW |
