I think you are correct, manufactures already produce their most advanced architectures in smd packaging only, e.g., xmega, silabs, arms etc, but I can still lay my hands on some good pdil 40 parts with plenty of headroom contingency.

Like all good LCR meter's mine has a zero auto adjustment, i.e., short the leads out and press ZERO button, job done, flying leads or no flying leads it makes no difference.
