There's the beauty of the 8051 - you've just mentioned 4 different manufacturers in one breath!

AVRs are single-source - which may or may not be an issue to you.

Out of interest, did you consider ARM Cortex-M3 or -M0 in your search for your 8051-replacement?

Not that I have anything against AVRs - I've been happy to use some...
