That's one general and one personal problem:

General: The entire AVR architecture is single-source. If Atmel decide to ditch the AVR line, or change their strategy in some way that adversely affcts you, then you have nowhere else to go.

Personal: Richard has a personal aversion to Atmel, based on a bad past experience.
(there are a few here with similar aversions to Atmel)
