Atmel recommend a max of 20 MHz, I was quite surprised when I replaced the 20 MHz crystal for a 30MHz and the AVR carried on running no problems (sic) You mean you haven't noticed any problems - yet... if the chip don't lock up at 1.5x clock speed then whats the problem? The problem is that you have absolutely no guarantee whatsoever that the chip will continue to operate correctly - especially as other operating conditions vary. You also have absolutely no guarantee whatsoever that any other chip will even work at all at 1.5x "maximum" clock. So you might just happen to be "lucky" (sic?) and get away with it for a one-off - but it's no way to do a professional design. indeed the micro will consume more energy by increasing the clock but that depends on application surely? No - if the clock is faster then it will use more power! Or did you just mean that using more power may not be significant to some applications...? |
