well, good, when I've run out of mips using standard AVR's I'll consider using the xmega range.

Although I have no experiences with GCC but correct if I'm wrong GCC is a free compiler right?, I don't use free compilers but prefer to spend £100 to £200 for a good compiler, by contrast crossware do a good 8051 c compiler supporting 64bit doubles but it costs £1000!
