Incidently, does anyone here have any experiences prototyping with smd's? Can it be done? Depends what you mean by "prototyping" - I find I can usually get far enough using manufacturers DevKits, etc. Take a look at http://www.carousel-design.com/embedded.html for some examples from Michael Karas Valentin Angelovski said:
Yes, for leaded SMT parts i.e. excluding QFN/BGA, Google up 'drag soldering' and have some fun! :-) SiLabs have a video on their site. I'm mostly a software guy these days, so my soldering isn't the best (and my eyesight isn't what it used to be) - but even I can solder SOIC without too much trouble. Adaptors from SM to 0.1" pitch are readily available; eg, here's one I prepared earlier: http://www.winslow.co.uk/ http://uk.rs-online.com/web/searc...md+adaptor http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/searc...allpartial Not great for High-speed stuff, of course - but consider that it's the same piece of silicon that would be inside a real DIL package...! I have friends who hand-solder QFPs |
