The Economist article is a reasonable summary to submit to a layperson. My background is in Geology, so I'm not fully qualified to judge the merits of any particular bit of research in this field. I'll hazard a guess your background is not in medicine or biology either, so I doubt you're any more qualified than I.


However... This particular article is written by someone that does do primary research along these lines, and has to meet the academic standards you seem to be demanding. All you have to do is clip the end off the URL I provided. His papers include plenty of citations for you to review.
