#139247 - Linux versions of FPGA tools Responding to: ???'s previous message |

FPGA vendors, at least Altera and Xilinx, have recognized that Windows is no longer the ideal platform, and provided a LINUX version. That's a relief. The Linux versions of most of the software I've encountered that's available for both LINUX and Windows seem to run noticeably faster (on the order or 8x) and dont "fall apart" as often (my limited sample, so YMMV). That's what got me to start fiddling with LINUX, despite its documentation shortfalls. The FPGA vendors were POUNDED by users before they introduced Linux versions of the tools. And those users weren't Windows users -- they were Unix people looking to replace expensive Sun and HP-UX boxes with cheap PCs running Linux. The Unix users rightly pointed out that the Windows tools were, and still are, actually the Unix tools written with a Windows wrapper, and as such, a simple recompile should have been all that is necessary to port from Solaris to Linux. Of course, I'm waiting for that recompile so I can run the tools on X11 on my Mac. I'm sure I'll be waiting forever, but I'll bet that the 8-core Mac Pro will screeeeeeam when doing place-and-route. -a |
