I do realize that some people don't mind putting up with viruses, BSODs, etc, and I acknowledge that that is their right, so please don't start a flame war over it. Living virus and spyware-free on Windows is not hard if you are even moderately careful. In all my years using a PC and subsequently Windows, I have never once had a virus or spyware on my machine. And, no, I don't use anti-virus or anti-spyware programs. I consider Norton, McAfee, et al, to be viruses ... Seriously, though, in years of using Windows boxen, I've never gotten a virus, and for two reasons: one is that I never use Outlook or any its derivatives, which stupidly default to "run Javascript when opening mail" and "open remote images when opening mail" and other stupidities. On the PC, it's Mozilla Thunderbird with all image and HTML rendering and scripting and such disabled permanently. I've also set up rules such that any mail from an unknown (not in my address book) address with any images or HTML formatting is moved to the junk folder immediately. Also, the machines are never exposed to the "outside world." There's always a hardware router/firewall box between the computers and the world. -a |
