There are functional replacements for all software that I, and most people, need. If you're wedded to a particular solution such as Keil, that's a problem of your own choosing. I've always thought of "requiring" any particular program (as opposed to a functional equivalent)
SDCC is NOT a 'functional replacement' for Keil. You can not buy it from someone that, due to the price they charge, are OBLIGED to fix any bug you find (or answer any question) in minimal time. Also, the code generated is not as fast and not as compact. You only THINK they're obliged to fix something. In reality, YOU are obliged to establish that a product is suitable for your purposes as offered, else you're on your own. Now KEIL's is a good product, though probably far from perfect. If you happen to find any of the probably hundreds of bugs in KEIL, it's almost guaranteed that they'll never be fixed. They may tell you how to work around 'em, but they'll probably just tell you to "live with it." The fact that you've learned to live with 'em doesn't make one product better than another. The fact that it's certain SOMEONE will fix the bugs, sooner or later, if you are smart enough to report 'em, in SDCC, is what makes SDCC appealing. OK, if a Yugo is a 'functional replacement' for a Maserati, you are right about SDCC. I can almost guarantee that your Maserati will have less "up-time" than a Yugo. The problem with the Maserati isn't in the "replacement" but in the "functional." If it just has to sit in the garage and look pretty, well, it beats the YUGO every time. Now, find a 'functional replacement' for the SILabs software which is the only means existing for debugging the SILabs chips DO NOT tell me to "just use another chip", there is NO 'functional replacement' for this Maserati. How about finding me an ICE for the 'plain vanilla' '51 that will run under anything but windows. My iCE-51 runs on the MDS from Intel, which was over a decade before Windows. I have no problem with those of you that promote Linux and wish you all the best as long as you get your facts straight
Erik I personally haven't "switched" to LINUX, but I'm investigating it because Windows is no longer viable from where I sit. I'll continue to limp along with it as long as I can. It's bought and paid-for, after all. RE |
