#139102 - Being of a different generation ... Responding to: ???'s previous message |
I prefer not to have a computer around all the time. While it's nice to have the notebook to allow last-minute touch-up of a report or presentation while travelling, and while it's nice to use the CD player to listen to a favorite recording, I'd just as soon read a book. I guess I don't want to talk to anyone as much as most people, as I'd much rather email, where everyone has to consolidate their thinking before pressing "send."
As for screen size, I like the bigger screens, >19" quite a bit better than 17 and smaller, probably because my vision isn't what it once was, though I can fully appreciate the advantage of a small, light notebook. Someday, they'll build a display that unfolds into a nice, 30" wide seamless display along with a full-size collapsible full 101-key keyboard that has the "usual" 15-degree inclined pitch and "normal-feeling" keys. Likewise, I don't like cellphones, because, first of all, I like to use the time between "seeing people" to think about what I'm going to do next or, if I'm driving, to focus on arriving there on time and in one piece. When I carried a cellphone all the time, I found it was normally turned off so I could use the time constructively and safely. If there were sufficient bandwidth to do real "internet things" (>1.5Mbps) they'd be a handy attachment so one wouldn't have to find a hot-spot, and perhaps even to download updates, etc, while driving, but then, I don't want to be slaved to the computer either. I prefer to use time between destinations to plan out what I'm going to say when I get there, and how I'm going to say it. I don't approve of cellphone use in a vehicle in traffic, whether moving or stopped. Parked, it's OK. I can process urgent calls and emails when I get to my destination a bit early. RE |
