So you don't want to use Gigabit Ethernet? You don't use a wireless connection on a laptop? Or a DVD burner for large backups? Dual-head display is of no use? I can't live without dual-head display. (My ThinkPad G40 is now my lab machine and I use both the LCD and an external monitor with it.)
now for a counterpoint:
how much would it cost (if at all possible) to add 12 NATIVE (DO NOT even mention the USB to serial crap) serial ports to an Apple?

Funny you should say that as I have a G4 Mac at home with two PCI cards that have four serial ports each. I used the machine to talk to the serial ports on my former employer's VME CPU boards. Worked like a champ.

Your question may soon be relevant to Windows machines, once PCI slots go away. Are there any reasonably-priced PCI Express cards with four serial ports?
