Living virus and spyware-free on Windows is not hard if you are even moderately careful. In all my years using a PC and subsequently Windows, I have never once had a virus or spyware on my machine. And, no, I don't use anti-virus or anti-spyware programs.

The people that are most at risk to viruses and spyware are those that are not very technically inclined. And such people are not bound to want to deal with the intricacies of Linux.
