I thought the same thing until I started using a second display with my laptop. Now I feel that my development is somewhat crippled when I don't have one. Richard Erlacher said:
How are you using your laptop? Is it a desktop-replacement? Yes. I stopped using desktops back in about 2000 when I realized that the screen size of my new laptop was larger than that of my monitor. So rather than using my laptop only on trips, I started using it all the time. Was nice, too, since I just unplug the laptop and take it with me and never have to worry about forgetting to bring something with me. I can't imagine having two displays while sitting in a coach seat on a flight from LAX to Logan, and I can't imagine hauling two displays with me either. Of course not. On a plane, my laptop is perfect. When I get to the client location, if they happen to have a second monitor, great. If not, I still have everything with me. And when I get home I have an external monitor to increase my efficiency. I guess it's just how you plan to use 'em, but, once desk-bound, you have lots of options. Do you haul both displays with you when you travel for a couple of days? I might as well ask you if you haul your desktop with you when you go on travel a few days? No, of course I don't. When I'm at home I have the benefit of a desktop and when I need to travel, I just unplug and take it with me. Obviously I no longer have two screens, but no-one has two screens on an airplane. Please enlighten me on how having the capability of running two displays helps on your laptop if it's not a desktop-replacement application. I may be missing something. As I said, it is a desktop replacement. And it helps me because I do one of two things: 1) I put all my secondary programs on the external monitor and taskbar (things like he browser, email, my music player, etc.) and keep only the stuff I'm really working on on the display in front of me. 2) I often need to reference documents and datasheets while working. Instead of printing them or instead of swapping between windows, I just put my reference material on the external monitor and can glance at it as I code on the main laptop monitor.
