and does it under firmware control. When you're in power-down mode, it runs at oscillator/1024. You can force that by SFR settings, just as you control the 1/2 or 1/4 oscillator cycle per system clock ratio. That can also save power if you use a crystal at, say, 8 MHz and multiply it up to 32 when you have to go fast, yet normally run at 8. You can also split the difference.
