#126825 - Replacement costs Responding to: ???'s previous message |
I can produce basic 8051s (no flash) for way under a buck.
However, the replacement parts I sell usually go for $5 to $15, depending on the part. I really don't compete in the generic 8051s. I prefer to go after a specialty part that has been discontinued. So far, my biggest seller is the Philips P87C751 part in the 24 PDIP / 28 PLCC version. The gray market has these parts for about $10-$15, if you can get them. I had a customer of mine buy a large number, only to find out that they had already been programmed (OTP). I am currently selling a masked ROM version, but am going to switch to my flash so I can service smaller customers (<1K units). In the -751 application, I only need 2K program space. So do I throw away the other 510K, or do I leave it in, and give existing customers an easy upgrade path? I am designing the P89C668 device now since Philips just discontinued it. Again, I have the same choice. I need 65K. Do I throw away the remaining 447K, or find another use for it. This is definitely not a hobby device. And I generally don't make a device unless I have orders for at least 10K. |
