We're trained to do lots of things (just like car driving, really), but psychology gets in the way. If I had a pound for every time a pilots eyes told him one thing, but his head had already decided the opposite, I'd be rich. It's called 'Human Factors', and these days, every student pilot is examined on that subject, along with the more obvious Air Law, Meteorology, Aircraft Technical, etc.

Under stress, the brain can rule out sanity...
