In a word--astronomical. Bill Gates can afford it; you probably can't. Unless you find a job with health care benefits, plan on not getting sick. Finding an engineering job when you're over 50 has about the same odds as winning big in the lottery--essentially zero.

I'm not trying to discourage you from coming to California. If you do, look me up and pay a visit. But be aware of the harsh realities first.
