Brilliant! Could I have seen a sign to 'The Old Foundry' on the main road? Unlikely, but there is a pub called the Foundry Arms for which you may have seen a sign. Many thanks for the kind offer (I'm getting a little old and stiff for camping), but I do hope your US 'emigration' plans do come to fruition. But I also hope you keep your house in Norfolk - it is a beautiful spot (only spoiled by noisy aeroplanes and microlights...). The light planes and microloghts we love. The only noise nuisance we get is from the discos in the village hall. It is very tempting to turn the current outrageous UK house prices into VERY nice alternatives in other, saner parts of the world. How true, if they spoke English in France we would probably be living there now - and yes I admit we Brits are awful at learning other folks languages. Which reminds me, last time we visited California we found it hard to find folk who spoke English - broken English no problem. I should explain to list members who are still awake; 'Northrepps International' is one of the smallest airstrips in the UK. Some years ago, a friend of mine 'groundlooped' into the crop after catching a wingtip in the wheat. At the time the flight guide advertised the runway as being 90ft wide - in fact his 36ft wingspan overlapped crop on BOTH sides... I think it's a little wider now. It has definitely been 90ft for the four years we have lived here. That said, in the last 12 months there have been two accidents, both caused by pilots over shooting the runway. The prevailing wind means most landings come in over the road onto the runway so if you overshoot you end up in the adjacent corn/potato/sugarbeet field. Both accidents were caused by pilots landing the wrong way, with the wind. One ended up blocking the road and the other managed to hedge hop into the next field. Luckily noone was badly hurt. The airstrip was closed for a couple of months but is now open again. Ian |
