Go through Houston, San Antonio, across southern Texas to El Paso, head north on I-25 to Denver
I'd go to San Antone, well, you have to see the Alamo (not that I understnad why) cross north to Austin and then get the lakes and the Balcones. slower, but much more scenic.

I personally have a strong bias to the southwest. I'd personally check out NYC, Washington DC, and then pretty much high-tail it out to the southwest:
Arw, come on we southeasteners have pleanty great stuff: The Chesapeake Bay bridge, The outer banks, Charleston, Saint Augustine .... Of course "old" here does in no way match "old" in England

And all that is on the coast.
