But you and I share a common benefit, no need to live near jobs. So I would recommend that you start by leasing a motor home and visit some of the mountain and plains states for a month or two before settling in anywhere. Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Nebreaska, Kansas, Oklahoma, all could make nice choices. Also visit the south and the northeast. Obviously I'd steer clear of Boston/Cambridge, but Deleware and New Hampshire are beautiful. The Carolinas, Georgia, Tennessee, ..., you get the idea. As we are retired, one of the primary reasons for spending a few years in the USA is to see a goodly amount of it. Motorhoming or something similar we plan to do a lot of. California is as much a sunny warm base as anything, not somewhere we would spend a lot of time at except in the winter ;-) I spent some time at Forth Worth on business a few years back and enjoyed the wide open spaces of Texas a lot - not to mention the steaks. On thing it is hard for us to get away from is that in the UK you are never more than 60 miles from the sea and we really love the sea. Right now it is just a couple of miles away. Being based far in land would be quite difficult for us. Ian |
