It's uselessly vague. Interestingly, Americans are citizens of the United States of America. Mexicans are citizens of the United States of Mexico (the official name of Mexico). If citizens of Mexico are Mexicans, there's no reason why citizens of the U.S.A. aren't properly referred to as Americans. I could go for calling people "North American" or "Central American" or "South American," but to call them "American" when they aren't from the U.S.A. seems to me to be intentionally confusing the issue.
