I once had a very tempting offer in the south Bay area. I looked and looked for a suitable house, and couldn't find even a "decent" two-bedroom house, and I need to have a free-standing house, not a condo, for under 2E6 that has anything near the 2500 square feet I have now, and it's just a small ranch-style. Out in CA, the "Joneses" as in "keeping-up-with,"like to measure their indoor area in acres (acre = 43560 sf) and they really like looking down their long noses at those with only a 6000 sf house. Expectations of square footage obviously differ. In the UK we get by with a lot less than 2500sq ft. We brought up three kids in a house half that size and it was considered a largish executive style house in the UK. The majority of the Uk population live in houses half that size. We now live in a 2400sq ft property and it is way too big for the two of us - it is just too much work to keep clean. So 1200 sq ft would be plenty big enough for us. Ian |
