There are equation manipulators and mathmaticians.

The former have learned the 'rules of the game' and can solve real-world problems, but are unlikely to discover anything new.

The latter understand what 'goes on under the hood' and have a deeper knowledge of the subject. They also can solve real-world problems, but may extend the reach of human knowledge.

So the answer to your question depends on your goal.
