It keeps appearing in this forum. Why? Well, the last time it was clearly a school assignment. It often comes up because they're already using the 805x-core MCU in 803x mode. That means that they have already sacrificed the 16 port pins that are used to comprise the external bus in order to interface with external memory. Often, they just want to recover a port or two.
If you have to use external memory (e.g. you have large >32KB blocks of data to receive, process, and transfer out) you often have to use external data memory. Sometimes, SCI/IIC will provide a workable solution, which means that using a different MCU that offers that option will do the trick. However, sometimes it won't. That's why a GENERAL treatment on various aspects of I/O expansion would be a "good thing" to use Martha Stewart's words. RE |
