Which is what a microcontroller wants to be. Unfortunately, they can't do enough useful work, left to their own devices, in many situations.

For as long as I can remember, "not enough I/O's" has been a chronic problem.

I've had to build circuits many times, that had 60-80 I/O's, and more in rare cases. Sooner or later, one has to have lots of I/O. It CAN be dealt with.
