#126098 - Over here it was Whole Language Reading Responding to: ???'s previous message |
Hi Steve,
We had a similar bought over here where teachers decided to stop teaching phonetics as the basis for reading and start teaching reading by what they termed the "whole language" method instead. The education bureaucrats noticed that no one reads by sounding out letters to form words. Instead, fluent readers just "see" the whole word and recognize it. So that's how they figured they would teach school children to read. It was a disaster. When they finally realized that they were literally graduating students who couldn't read their own diplomas, they decided to revisit their assumptions. Being education majors, they decided that they should use both methods. |
