#126099 - Numeracy Responding to: ???'s previous message |
At University, I remember a flatmate saw an advert that showed a woman sat on a huge pile of bags of sugar. The advert alleged that this was the amount of sugar consumed by a "typical" woman in a year - or something. So he tapped a few keys on his calculator and said, "that's 5.2374 pounds per day!"
I thought about it for a few moments and realised, no - that's about 5 days per pound! That's where mental arithmetic really comes in - as a sanity check that you haven't done something stupid on your calculator like mis-placing the decimal point, or inverting the calculation! |
