Given that modern state of affairs, does it make sense any more to teach long division to kids? We old farts, that used the slide rule extensively, learned to "guess" the answer. The problem with 'calculator kids' whether the know long division or not is that they have no idea whatsoever if the result presented on the calculator is correct or a miskey was made in the operation. I have been told by "calculator kids" the most obvious wrong 'facts' and when I tell them "that is wrong" the show me the calculator screen.
