It was later abandoned to be able to expand the bus using IIC, but worked within the specs for the chips and I saw no problems

That 1.2 Mbytes/sec rate is considerably slower than the oldest, slowest i8255 can do.

how did you get ANYTHING out of a 12 clocker at 8 MHz at more than 1MHz?
