The trick is to discern the abiding principles from the fleeting implementation details;

eg, the use of parallel programmers and UV-EPROMs is a fleeting implementation detail - now long obsolete, and replaced by Flash and ISP/IAP.

The reason I said that I was looking for a "small" 8051 is because the books said that they are supposed to use less power

What did they mean by, "they"? Were they talking about 8051s in general, or "small" 8051s in particular (whatever "small" may mean to them)?

All performance details - including power consumption - are very much fleeting implementation details; vendors are constantly bring out versions that are faster/cheaper/lower-power...
