Is a hobbyist not extremely likely to gain great advantage from having JTAG debug?. Even with my old eyes I would rather solder a 'difficult' chip than do without emulation.

I don't know what is "power miser".
the OP mentioned 'battery' a "power miser" is a chip (such as the 8051f9xx)m that uses very little power.
