#179767 - Feature Creep Responding to: ???'s previous message |

But the user who did select an ARM chip with 32 or 64kB flash instead of 8 or 16kB for a 8051 has the advantage that if a customer calls and wonders if he can create a custom edition of the device with just a couple of new features will be able to say yes. He got the extra kilobytes of RAM and flash without extra cost. But the extra space means that the unit is extendable without any redesign.
I quite often get requests to add significant additions to existing products years after they were released. Then it is very good if I can switch to a pincompatible big brother... We see frequent posts here where people have designed themselves into a corner by choosing a chip barely sufficient for the initial requirement - they are then stuck when extra features are requested. Also when the the requirements have grown beyond not just particular chips, but the capabilities of the 8051 architecture itself. |
