If the manufacturer dies, you can find other 8051 chips that are mostly identical. Everyone seems to think it's the same with ARM. It isn't. The core is the same, but there can be huge differences between interrupt controllers, UARTs etc. It's only the modules that are sold by ARM that are available from a wide set of manufacturers. An Atmel ARM is not even close to be able to run a program for an NXP ARM. That was one of the issues addressed (to some extent) in the Cortex-M series. Still not perfect - but better than it was! |
