On the contrary, AT89C52, is the only choice for those products. Price, size, availability, tools,...AT89C52 is still the best for those products even today.

However, there is one area, where AT89C52 does not fit.
Low-cost Temperature controller....this is the reason why I have an AT89C52 with an internal ADC (@price <$2) in my wish list. This is where, I have to be dependant on PIC and AVR, because they have an internal 10-bit ADC.
