IIRC there is something along the "consult us for replacement" together with the "not recommended for new design" in the said datasheets. The state of affairs with the appnotes and software/firmware also provides clues as per Microchip's commitment to the SST89'.

However, they can see it also as a milking cow. As such, it could last for a couple of years from now, until the trickle of demand dries out; and it does not really pose a threat to their main business line - they surely know that the existing '51 users would migrate more likely to other '51 (e.g. the Atmel 'RD2 line, or Nuvoton's for that matter) or upgrade to AVRs, than turn to the lower-end PICs.

NXP is a different issue - they appear simply to be annoyed by the '51s by now.
