Sure, Richard, it will work, the transfer medium could be anything, serial, LPT, firewire, IrDA FIR, wireless... and of course, USB. I just wanted to point out a possibility to make an ultralightweight datacapture module (which can serve as a rudimentary LA, especially if there is almost no limit in the number of samples which are to be stored on PC), thanks to the internal 384-byte FIFO in the FTDI chip, that's all.
