What's wrong with DOS? You can boot alternatively into DOS (check out FreeDOS for time being) from a diskette, grab your data via the parallel port (you said you are able to do it in DOS) then save it and process later in WinXP or whatever.

You might get inspired also here: http://minila.sourceforge.net (there are similar projects around but in this one I was involved and have one, too, so can witness it's working).

I also promised a '51-based simple LA as a hobby project a couple of months ago but my friend doing the SW gave up so I am now trying to understand what he has already done and as I hate C and it's in C... :-( But if you will pester me a bit I might stitch together what has already been done, it IS working just far from being finished...
