Apart from the hobbyist market?
This does seem to be a marketing strategy for both PIC and AVR: catch the hobbyists! And, it must be said, it does seem to work for them! Hi Andy and Val Atmel AVR offer both smd and through hole chips for same model of chip, its possible to buy the ATMEGA644 as smd or PDIL40. Hence, for low cost prototyping work, I use PDIL40 and a string of bread boards, once I've completed a design, I then develop the PCB or ask somebody to do this for me using the smd variant of the particular AVR microchip.Whats wrong with that? The ATxmega are indeed only smd but I am quite happy with 644 and its variants in PDIL. Also, I must point out that the xmega range is code compatible with the ordinary AVR's, in otherwords the AVR instruction set is the same as in the xmega range. The only gripe I've got with the mega AVR's is they have only two prescaleable 8 bit counters and one 16-bit counter, despite having a multitude of different features, I think ATMEL should have implemented 3 16-bit counters. This problem has been addressed and solved with the xmega series. JA |
