I think it would interesting to know what proportion of their sales are hobbyist-only, I'm sure it would be fairly substantial..

Clearly (my opinion), apart from the DIP availability aspect, there are, of course, numerous other things to like about both camps from a hobbyist perspective i.e. really easy to learn, program and use for starters, backed by large (almost) religious communities ;-)
