#177830 - Please don't be scared to continue ask questions Responding to: ???'s previous message |
I've learned my lesson: "Don't ask stupid, incomplete questions in world-wide chat forums." Actually, you have slightly missed here. We don't know if a question is stupid or not. In reality, most questions are not stupid. People regularly get told that it's better to ask a question too much than to do something stupid becase they didn't ask. The problem when answering questions, is that there are so many things we don't know about the person asking the questions. So we don't know what is a "good" answer. That either tends to result in the thread getting stuck. Or it tends to result in people giving huge answers, trying to add in a lot of side information just in case that information is needed. And, as you have noted in this thread, once in a while, someone starts a huge debate about how wrong it is to broaden the scope of the answers, just because they fail to see that the world is not black or white. That a good answer 20 years ago need not be a good answer now. That a good answer for one person may not be a good answer for a different person. Alas, you got involved in a big fight that did not really have anything to do with you. This tends to happen every 3-6 months for some reason. This is normally a friendly forum and if you see your name mentioned in this thread, it's because people are trying to project their answers based on the assumptions of a virtual person that does not exist. Your thread just happened to arrive at a critical time and activate one of these debates. If you have more questions, I think I would recommend you to start a new thread since this one has been so seriously hijacked ;) |
