I very much suspect that he doesn't really want to hang himself - but, if he follows the course of the question as asked, he may well end up (metaphorically) hanging himself.

That is precisely the reason why your mantra of, "Just answer the question as asked" is so wrong!

If the question as asked is likely to lead him up the smelly creek of nasty stuff with no means of propulsion, then I think it is very reasonable indeed to point out that he probably doesn't want to go there!!
