I couldn't agree more!!

And then, if the endeavor is to go off and actually build some number of devices that derive from the development project, the parts collection of the 1991 style design will cost more in several ways: BOM total cost, BOM acquisition (i.e. number of line items), PC board space, power consumed, etc etc. - If you can successfully acquire those old parts.
