recall the Christian Crusades and the Inquisition, ... (emphasis added) "Recall," the Crusades, or the Inquisition? How? Do you? Perhaps you meant "study." Of course, the simple fact that you would even inadvertently equate the two as being in any way morally equivalent tells me that you've not done even that. Well, let's see ... the Crusades, mainly intended to spread Christianity across Europe and Asia at the point of the sword. Convert or die! The Inquisition, hey, what a show. Hey, Torquemada, whaddaya say? Will you repent? Of course, no one EXPECTS the Spanish Inquisition, what with their three main weapons (surprise, fear, and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope). Bring on the comfy chair and the soft pillow! OK, you're right. Mel Brooks' and Monty Python's versions of the Inquisition had NOTHING on the horrors perpetrated BY THE CHURCH IN THE NAME OF GOD. Another thing the Crusades and the Inquisition had in common: it made allies of the Jews and the Muslims. Imagine that. -a |
