Did we create God or did God create us? Clearly, we created G-d. If one can hypothesize an omnipotent, omniscient diety, then one must wonder: who created the creator? And then who created the creator's creator? And so on, into infinity. (Recall a bold point made by Arthur C. Clarke near the end of Childhood's End. As the last human, Jan, is given the grand tour of the museum, he notes the Overmind, off in the distance, and realizes: Even the Overlords serve a Master.) Every culture has a creation myth. Here in the Sonoran Desert, we see Kokopelli on nearly every doorpost (a Native American Mezzuzzah?) and on t-shirts and whatnot. One myth is that he played his flute and created the Earth. As far as creation myths go, it's no better or worse than Genesis, or the crackpot beliefs of Scientology. Does anyone today believe in the Greek and Roman gods of myth? At one time, Zeus and Apollo and Mars and Aphrodite and the rest were all worshipped by people who believed these gods were real. Now these stories are told as literature and as myth and nobody doubts that the gods were "Created." It may well be that in 6,000 years hence, the Jesus and Mary chain will be viewed by our descendants as the characters in a complex, challenging myth, as vast and as textured as the tales of the gods of ancient Rome and Greece. -a |
