#114959 - The answer is in the math Responding to: ???'s previous message |

Well what is telling the monkeys to stop after they get the first word right? Jez and Steve have alreay answered that question. The short answer is "mathematics". What natural force gave man dominion over the planet earth? Other than religious reasons, why would you assume we were given dominion over the planet? Ever think maybe we just took it? Surely we are not the strongest creature, nor are the the swiftest... Nope, we're not. But we are the meanest SOBs in the valley. Also just a tad bit smarter than the other critters. That gives us all the edge we need to take dominion by force. Ever wonder why sapiens is the only species of the genus homo? It's because we killed all the rest of them. ...and there are other creatures such as dolphins and whales and monkeys that have equivalent intelligence to us. Bzzt! Sorry, no cigar. Dolphins, whales and monkeys don't have equivalent intelligence. Everything Man can do can be done by some other species, although to a lesser degree. Except for one thing. We use tools, so do several other primates. We build things, so do beavers. We commit suicide, so do lemmings. We do mathematics, so do...absolutely no other animals. There is no evidence that any other creature can do mathematics at any level of complexity. None. It is what uniquely defines us as human. Robert Heinlein put it well, if perhaps a bit abrasively: "Anyone who cannot cope with mathematics is not fully human. At best he is a tolerable subhuman who has learned to wear shoes, bathe, and not make messes in the house." I don't quote him because I'm a mathematician, nor did I become a mathematician because of his opinion. I quote him because there is some truth in his statement. If you really want to know why the evolution of intelligent creatures is not only possible in the lifetime of the Earth, but is virtually inevitable, learn the math. Put it together with demonstrable facts from chemistry, biology, physics, etc, ad nauseum, and the conclusion is undeniable. We are here because the Laws of the Universe (read "mathematics") dictates it. If we truly were created by God, then God is mathematics. Pardon me if I don't choose to worship it. |
