#114831 - Kamiokande
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Hi Steve,

Thanks! I couldn't remember the name. And if they're up to 10^35 years then they've pushed it up by a couple of orders of magnitude since I took the course. And I'm not confused about cosmology theory, but you're right that I was ignoring the Hubble estimate. I used the Kamiokande estimate because, as I said earlier, I wanted to give the greatest reasonable benefit of doubt to random mutation/natural selection. As I pointed out elsewhere, the shorter Hubble estimate strengthens my position. Also, don't overlook that the Hubble estimate assumes open expansion. So one can only limit the age of the universe to the 10 to 20 Gyrs of the Hubble estimate if one is willing to assume that expansion is open and protons are eternal. What are the odds that anything composed of constituent parts would be eternal?

As for Kamiokande bearing on the age of the universe, you nailed it. Once they know the decay mechanism and rate, they can determine the age of protons, and by extension the age of the universe.
