#114797 - Science versus faith Responding to: ???'s previous message |

Perhaps I am missing something, but all I can glean from your (you and Jez's) comments is that you both rely on your own intuitive assertions, not quantitative empirical analysis, as a basis for truth. Absolutely not. My scientific views are subject to experimental testing, and the theories are falsifiable, Are yours ? Lets try a rigourous experiment to test the power of prayer for example. The passing down of the narratives of the bible stories from uneducated desert tribes to the present day has to include a certain degree of licence in that movement down through time You will be forced to conclude that in order for life to have evolved as it has, there must have been some discriminating influence behind those mutations. Time simply doesn't allow for random mutations to have achieved what has been achieved, not in the lifetime of our Earth, and not even in the age of the universe. But these ARE directed mutations,if you like, mutation is happening all the time, most mutations are benign, most do nothing. the simple fact that some ,favour a specific organism over another is all it takes. The fact that PARALLEL evolution takes place in isolated populations, like the Australian marsupials, also gives strong support to the theory of evolution. The existence alone of genetic disease like sickle cell anaemia and cystic fibrosis, the sharing of huge amounts of our DNA with other primates are all evidence of an evolutionary link. Certainly anyway, evidence for a theory that can be proved, and also falsified. P.S., The age of the Earth is indeed somewhere around 4 - 6 E+9 years. The age of the universe however is on the order of E+32 to E+33 years, a far cry more than a factor of 3 times the age of the Earth. Err. From where do you get that ? The accepted scientific estimate is about 14 Gigayears. At 10^33 years, your God could not have created the radioactive elements without them having decayed away to nothing. Unless of course your God is deliberately falsifying the evidence of his own creation. Your God has made a very good sjob of making the world look as if it is 4-5 billion years old, set in a universe 14 billion years old. So which is it ? You are certainly a long way from being an unapproachable young-earth creationist, and I welcome the debate. Steve |
