Since we've got no information about the tasks of the two MCU's, I doubt it's safe to assume you can just AND the outgoing messages. If they're a bit or two out of synchronization, the message will never be correct at the receiver.

What's unclear is why the O/P wants to use the serial protocol. He can use the two P3 bits as individual signaling channels if he wants. He can even send serialized data over those port bits.
